A New Year, New Opportunities

Another year in the books. 2017 was a year of transition for the Sports Commission but one that still saw growth and development of new events. Marisa Reeder did a terrific job of holding everything together during the transition of the Executive Director leaving until I was hired in July. We also hired Jordyn Bartholomew in September to fill the last open staff position. It is necessary to look back to learn but we are always looking to the future and how we can grow and improve to benefit our community. The staff is complete and energized and ready to tackle a new year.

In 2018 we are reviving our Friends of the Sports Commission campaign (please visit josc-nc.com for more information). We will also continue on with fantastic events such as the Marine Chevy Quick Stick Lacrosse Invitational (February), Bojangles’ Battle at the Beach Soccer (March and August), our second annual Marine Chevy Freedom Fight Boxing (April), the Coastal Bank & Trust Hall of Fame Banquet (TBD), Marine Federal Credit Union Football Jamboree (August), and many other recurring events.

We are also working on several new additions to our events schedule. The ones we can share with you now include the Jacksonville Classic Basketball tournament. This is a youth event (grades 3 through 11) that will be held June 15-17 in partnership with the East Coast All-Stars. We will also once again host the New River Splash on September 15 but with added water and land-based competitions to attract

visitors. Stay tuned for more information on that event. Another new event that we can announce is the Jax Lax 7v7. This event will be held October 6-7 and will features young kids through adults competing in exciting seven on seven lacrosse.

As you can see, we are striving to grow new events while improving the established ones. We exist to foster economic development in Onslow County and we hope you will support us through our Friends of the Sports Commission campaign, by sponsoring events, and by attending events. Please follow us on social media (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snap

chat) and visit our website for more information.

Happy New Year!

Scott Smith, Executive Director
